Technology is all about making our lives easier. Washing machines and dishwashers, free up time for us to do other things. Computers and the internet allow us to connect with people around the world instantly.  Generative AI allows us to simplify a lot of routine work.

All technology isn’t bad in itself. What becomes dangerous for us Christians is when we not only get used to a life of ease and comfort, but when we begin to pursue it at all costs.

That’s why Pope Benedict XVI warned us when he first became pope, that Christ did not promise an easy life. Those who desire comforts have dialed the wrong number. Rather, he shows us the way to great things.

Today, we remember the martyrs of China and their witness as the ultimate example of what it means to not pursue a life of ease and comfort, but to pursue greatness. However, it’s too easy for us to see their witness as what they gave up. That is, their lives. And miss what it is they gained. It’s too easy to see what God demands from us, that we forget what God wants to give us. In other words, we forget that God is a God of yes, not just a God of no.

Our readings today are full of examples of this god of yes. And our first reading from wisdom, God wants to give us his love, his grace, and his care. Above all these, our three readings all remind us that the greatness we’re created for, what God wants to give us, isn’t only life, but eternal life.

All we need to do is face insults from others, because we’re Christians, and ultimately die to ourselves. In fact, Jesus says, hate your life in this world. That’s hard to hear.

But he’s not asking us to hate ourselves or the life he gave us. That’s never God’s will. What God has created is not evil. He’s asking us to hate the lie that life in this world is all there is. That’s the thing God commands us to let die. This dying to self and bearing fruit isn’t only for martyrs. We’ve experienced smaller versions of it ourselves.

For those who are single and see their vocation as ministry, you see how being available to those you serve bears the fruits of encountering God in a multitude of people. For those who are married and are parents, you see how joining your spouse for one of their hobbies, or staying up with a child who is sick, draws you out of yourself, and allows you to experience greater humility.

For those who are athletes, you see how helping your teammates improve not only helps you grow in your sport, but deepens your habit of virtue. Rather than seeing ministry, family, and teammates as burdens, the God of yes offers something to us for our sacrifices.

Our relationship with Jesus, like any relationship, isn’t about sacrifice for the sake of sacrifice. But about reordering our desires. An easy way to take inventory of this is to start by asking, how much dedicated time every day do I spend with God and God alone? Does this time with God center my being a daughter or son, a spouse, a parent, a student, an employee or employer?

Or is it just another thing to do in my day? Maybe you find that you do spend time with Jesus regularly. It’s helpful then to ask, when I’m alone with Jesus, what do we talk about? What do we do? Living in the fast paced life of Silicon Valley, setting aside 15 minutes to pray every day in itself can feel like martyrdom. I also know the struggle.

When I was first ordained a deacon and had to start praying the liturgy of the hours, I remember one time at the end of a long day of teaching, asking myself, Is it time to pray again? How much time are we supposed to spend praying? But I remind myself, Edward, you are now ordained. Your yes now means you have the duty and privilege to pray for the church. If you desire to help Jesus shepherd his flock, you also desire to pray for them. Right, ordering your desires means desiring eternal life with God above all else.

And sacrifices, made with rightly ordered desires, are then no longer mainly about loss. They become us sharing in the life of the God of yes. This god of yes, doesn’t promise us comfort. He promises us greatness. Every no God speaks, and is in his service of that one great yes, eternal life with him. And we see that, yes, most clearly here at this altar. where bread and wine will soon become the very body and blood Christ gave up for us.

That one sacrifice on the cross is what makes any of our sacrifices worth something at all. We cannot earn eternal life, but every sacrifice we make, ordered rightly toward God, is already a small participation in Christ’s own yes. The same yes, the martyrs of China spoke with their lives. The same yes, we or our parents spoke when they crossed the ocean. The same yes, we’re invited to speak today. in maybe 15 minutes of prayer. in a marriage, in a classroom, in a silicon Valley office. May we, like gold tested in fire, be found worthy.

And when our lives are spent, may God take us to himself forever.

也许,是在每天十五分钟的祈祷中;

也许,是在婚姻生活中;

也许,是在教室里;
